ANNIE O: Tell us about your Wonderland EP. When did you start writing it, and how does it feel to have it ready for the world to hear?
JASMINE THOMPSON: I've been focusing on this EP for just over a year, so it feels insane to finally be able to share it with my followers. I'm very proud of this project.
You got your start on YouTube. When did people start taking notice? Is there still a favorite cover you've done?
My channel started getting popular when I was about 11 or 12. A lot of people were sharing my music and being supportive, so it just kicked off from there. I really like my cover of "Cherry Wine" by Hozier.
You've worked with some great songwriters on your EP. Tell us about what you've learned from the process.
I am so grateful to have worked with so many great people over the past year or so. They have taught me to not overthink songwriting; it should just come naturally and it's all about telling a story that you are passionate about.
Is there a particular song that's really personal to you on the new EP? What are you most excited for people to hear?
The song "Fix Me" is about how I am trying to always be there for my family. I want to make sure that they know that I care about them and that I am grateful to have them. I'm also excited for people to hear my song "Drama" because it has an interesting meaning for me!
What's the most English thing about you?
I definitely use the classic English swear words. I drink my tea and I'm quite calm. I think growing up in London makes you very creative and opens your eyes to a lot of culture and art because of how busy the city is.
What do you love most about New York?
New York is so big. I love all of the buildings and love the rivers. There is something really nice about how quiet it can be by the river even though you are looking at a massive city.
Are there any tracks by other artists you currently have on repeat?
At the moment, I am listening to Mark Ronson's "Somebody to Love Me." It's just such a good song to belt out and it's got good rhythm.
Any summer touring plans?
I'm doing my very first headline tour around Europe. I'm playing my very first shows in New York, France, Italy, and Germany.
If Jasmine Thompson had a superpower, what would it be?
I'd want to fly...or be able to create art by imagining an image in my head and then it just appears on a wall.
What can we expect from your show at The Annie O Music Series?
I'm going to be sharing my new EP Wonderland. It's one of the first shows of the Wonderland tour, so I am probably going to be super emotional and happy to be performing it for the first time.
