Songkran, Rinse & Repeat in Hua Hin

Here’s everything you always wanted to know about Songkran (but were afraid to ask).

Never forget: Water guns went off before a single (real) shot was fired on The White Lotus, season 3. That’s because our favorite trio of gal pals wandered into a Songkran festival in episode 4—stumbling upon a celebration of Thailand’s New Year and the world’s biggest water fight.

This year, The Standard, Hua Hin is throwing a pre-Songkran beach bash featuring a live performance from Paradise BangkokDJ MizuyoDJ Natsha, and Krit Percussion. They'll bring the heat with reggae, Molam, and, of course, plenty of ice-cold drinks.

But first, let's talk Songkran.

Sounds like a party, huh? It is—with a spiritual side.

Songkran comes every April, marking the start of a new Thai calendar. What’s up with the water? It began as a symbolic cleansing ritual—pouring water over elders’ hands—and took on a life of its own. Songkran is equal parts spiritual purge and water battle. For at least three days, everybody's fair game, from children to monks, elders and tourists. If you're on the street, you're probably getting splashed.

Songkran’s not just about soaking strangers, though. Temple attendance soars, families get together, statues of Buddha are bathed respectfully. During the festival, Thais say goodbye to bad luck, honor their ancestors and turn over a new leaf.

Just about every community in Thailand, from Bangkok to Hua Hin, goes nuts for Songkran. All of Thailand gets in the spirit of a little good-natured mischief. If you’re joining us this Songkran, here are a few tips: protect your phone, wear clothes that can get wet, avoid people’s faces and don’t take yourself too seriously. Just let go.
