To Bangkok-based multi-disciplinary artist Nanzo, everything is a potential canvas. Her whimsical illustrations and paintings can be found on bottles of wine, buses, ceramics, cakes, clothing—you get the picture. For her latest canvas, Nanzo took her talents to our Lido Restaurant at The Standard, Hua Hin and covered our wall one thoughtful brushstroke at a time. We caught up with Nanzo to talk about her last decade as an artist, what inspired her painting at Lido, and so much more.
Let’s start from the beginning, did you always dream of being an artist?
As a kid I was surrounded by art, my parents are actually artists. Ever since I can remember I have loved to draw. I am currently still painting and exploring different mediums while developing new styles and techniques. Painting and drawing was a hobby that became an avenue to meet new people. Making a living out of art has been a blessing!
What does being an artist mean to you?
I view art as a universal language. Being an artist makes me feel liberated, and it allows me to express myself and uplift others through my craft. If I can brighten up even one person’s day, then it is all worth it.
What inspires or influences your work?
The female figure, nature, music, and people.
If you were a painting, which one would you be?
I really resonate with Hajime Sorayama’s robot paintings. I admire his 80s airbrush technique and how he portrays the female figure with a sort of erotic robot style.Describe a day in the life of Nanzo…
Honestly, my days are pretty chill. The only constants are lots of laughter and delicious food.
Tell us about your process. How do you get from a blank surface to a work of art?
I’m constantly drawing whatever pops into my head whether it is on paper or my iPad. I then decide what to bring to life on my canvas.
Do you have a favorite canvas to work on?
Mostly I paint on linen and cotton fabric canvases. I also love to paint on pottery, clothing, and wood.
What can we expect from your installation at The Standard, Hua Hin?
The concept of my “In The Garden” painting was to bring a sense of harmony into the environment. It seeks to modernize traditional household landscape paintings.
How has The Standard, Hua Hin inspired the art you’ve created?
I was inspired by the environment and sense of community that is present throughout the hotel. It also helps having the beautiful scenery that surrounds this place—the beach, the people, the vibes.
What did you love most about your experience at The Standard, Hua Hin?
I had an amazing time making art with friends at the pottery workshop on Christmas Eve. The food was also a plus!
