What You Should Be Doing This November

To celebrate the release of director Laurie Anderson's new film, Heart of a Dog, Cinefamily invited Anderson to show a 35mm print of her 1986 film, Home of the Brave, the genre-bending film that features guitarist Adrian Belew, keyboardist Joy Askew, and author William S. Burroughs, famously seen dancing a slow-tango with Anderson. The 90 minute film will be followed by a Q&A with Anderson.

History, mythology, and human drives (sex, violence, and power) that have propelled civilizations intertwine in Matthew Barney's most ambition project yet. Inspired by Norman Mailer's 1983 novel, Ancient Evenings, the film RIVER OF FUNDAMENT, written in collaboration with composer Jonathan Bepler, tells a story of regeneration and rebirth. The exhibition at MOCA–Barney's first major solo museum exhibition in Los Angeles–features 85 works inspired by the film, including large-scale sculptures, drawings, and storyboards, as well as the epic length film.

From Here to Eternity, an exhibition of new work by Adel Abdessemed shows a series of nearly 100 black stone drawings on paper and military tarpaulin. The work is inspired by the 1953 film of the same name, in which Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr kiss passionately on the beach. As a child in Algeria, Abdessemed viewed such western films under the edit and strict censorship of the Algerian government, who cut out any scene that portrayed physical contact between the sexes.
